Research Interests
- Using participatory approaches in research design to ensure that face-to-face and digital mental health programs have real-world impact, scalability and improve mental health service quality and outcomes for the people using them.
- Mixed methods hybrid implementation-effectiveness research evaluation, with a particular focus on harnessing qualitative research to improve mental health services.
- Addressing the social and mental health needs and outcomes of people with significant mental health problems, particularly through self-management and peer facilitated support.
With two decades of experience in academic and senior management roles across the mental health sectors in Australia and the UK, A/Prof Milton has led evaluations for numerous government and non-government mental health programs nationally. As a Chief Investigator (A), A/ProfMilton currently leads research streams (including NHMRC and MRFF funded grants) focusing on the co-development and evaluation of mental health and wellbeing programs for children, youth, and adults. These programs utilise participatory design and hybrid implementation-effectiveness evaluation methodologies, delivered through both face-to-face and digital platforms. Previously, A/Prof Milton served as Principal Research Associate and Senior Research Clinician at University College London (UCL), where she implemented evidence-based interventions across NHS mental health services and developed expertise in translational mental health research.
A/Prof Milton is an Editor for BMC Psychiatry, has served on the scientific advisory boards for SANE Australia and the Raise Foundation, and is the founding chair of the National Qualitative Research Network within the ARC Life Course Centre. She also contributes to several national and international committees, including the Lancet Commission into the physical health of individuals with complex mental health conditions.
