Associate Professor Caroline Gao is a biostatistician, environmental epidemiologist, and data scientist working at the intersection of climate change, youth mental health and mental health system research. She is the Head of Environment and Climate and Head of Data Strategy and Operation at Orygen and Centre for Youth Mental Health at The University of Melbourne.
Caroline leads interdisciplinary research focused on understanding and responding to the mental-health impacts of climate change, particularly among young people. Her work includes leading some of the world’s largest studies examining climate change and youth mental health, with findings contributing to national climate and mental-health policy. She leads the PRIME study, one of Australia’s largest youth climate mental health accelerators, which supports the development and evaluation of interventions spanning mental-health promotion, early intervention, and clinical care.
Caroline is also recognised for her expertise in biostatistics and mental health service research. She provides methodological leadership across large-scale national and international studies spanning youth mental health and digital innovation, including major longitudinal cohorts, clinical trials, prediction modelling studies, and health-system reform initiatives. Her work applies advanced statistical and machine learning methods to translate complex data into evidence-informed policy, and service innovation.
