Improving Overall, but Not for All: Youth Psychological Distress in Post‑Pandemic Australia

Since 2022, the proportion of young people experiencing psychological distress has steadily decreased, according to Mission Australia’s Annual Youth Survey. Despite this, there remains a disproportional difference in distress when considering those who identify as female, having experienced unfair treatment in the past year, living with disability, Indigenous, residing in public/social housing/out-of-home care, or gender diverse. Additionally, despite young people in inner regional, and outer regional and remote Australia experiencing lower psychological distress in 2012 when compared to those living in major city areas, by 2024 they are suffering proportionally higher psychological distress.
