Professor Shyamal Chowdhury

Dr Chowdhury graduated from Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh with a BSc (Hons.) in Economics, an MA in Economics from the University of Kiel, Germany and a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Bonn University, Germany. Prior to joining the University of Sydney, he worked for the International Food Policy Research Institute (from 2003–2006) and the World Bank (2006–2007) in Washington DC, USA.

He researches in the general areas of economic development, and agricultural economics. His research has a twin goal of producing cutting edge research outputs publishable in high-ranked general-interest journals in economics, and to finding evidence-based interventions that address both immediate poverty and hunger, as well as the long-term disadvantages that poor households, parents, and their children face. His specific research interests have been the functioning of rural labour and credit markets, and technology adoption in developing countries, and the formation of non-cognitive skills in children.
