Published: 2022
The HILDA Survey data have substantially deepened our understanding of the Australian labour force. In this article, we highlight key insights relating to: (1) labour force participation; (2) unemployment; and (3) wages. Using the panel structure of the data, along with the breadth of questions asked, researchers have been able to overcome econometric challenges and better understand how the Australian labour market operates. Much attention has also been directed towards understanding persistent labour market disadvantage and the long-lasting impact it can have. Together, these studies provide a plethora of useful recommendations for shaping future social and economic policy.
