Dr Michelle Sydes

Michelle Sydes is a criminologist and Lecturer at the School of Social Science. Michelle’s PhD explored the impact of immigration on neighbourhood violence and provided the first longitudinal examination of the immigration-crime link in the Australian context. Her research interests are centred on communities and crime – with particular focus on how changes in immigration, disadvantage and residential segregation impact neighbourhood crime. Between 2017 and 2018, Michelle worked in partnership with the Office of the Chief Inspector to promote, implement and assess evidence based practices at Queensland Corrective Services. Michelle continues to pursue research focused on understanding best practice in corrections. Michelle’s work has been published in leading national and international journals including the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, the Journal of Experimental Criminology, Crime and Delinquency, the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Criminology and the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology. Michelle has worked on and co-authored several systematic reviews including a rapid review of the ‘what works’ literature in corrections. This review was used by Queensland Corrective Services to guide and inform their 10 Year Strategic Plan.
