Researcher from the land of the midnight sun visits Sunshine State
The Life Course Centre became the research subject when a leading Norway Professor arrived in late-June for a month-long visit to learn more about the Centre’s approach.
Professor Cathrine Egeland is from Oslo Metropolitan University, which recently established the Nordic Centre for Research on Work and Family Life Through the Life Course (NORLIFE).
“Our ambition is for NORLIFE to become a centre of excellence,” Professor Egeland explained.
“It seemed obvious to learn as much as possible about how the Life Course Centre, as a centre of excellence with a life course focus, has been designed and developed both institutionally and strategically, and in terms of how to combine excellent research with societal impact.”
To achieve this, Professor Egeland had meetings with key researchers and institutional leaders to discover more about the Life Course Centre’s approach, as well as its multi-discipline and cross-nodal research.
“I am impressed both of the scale and scope of the Life Course Centre institutionally and in terms of addressing really complex issues of inequality and persistent disadvantage.”
The visit also provided an opportunity for a knowledge exchange, with early-career researchers and students invited to participate in a small-group mentoring session with Professor Egeland.
During the one-hour online meeting, they were able to pick Cathrine’s brain about a range of topics including work and career, opportunities, and glean insight from her for their career development.
“Apart from the mentoring session, I also gave a couple of presentations on the research we’re doing at NORLIFE.”
Apart from her visit to the Life Course Centre, Professor Egeland also ticked a few other items off her to-do list including exploring Queensland’s reef and rainforests.
“The nature here is just amazing, the animal life is so fascinating, and the sounds and colours of birds and plants is so much more intense here than how I experience it back home.”
