The unprecedented shifts experienced globally over the last two years have meant that social scientists have needed to rethink how they work and research. Drawing on her work on disadvantage and the life course, and her extensive experience working in multidisciplinary centres with a strong applied/policy focus over the last 10 years, Janeen Baxter examines the meaning of social research in the multidisciplinary environment and the importance of engagement and impact outside the academy as we move into the future.
Professor Janeen Baxter is the Centre Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course.
Janeen has research interests and expertise in gender inequality, family dynamics, life course and longitudinal studies and has published extensively in these areas. Janeen has led several major evaluations for government, including most recently the Evaluation of the Try, Test and Learn Fund for the Department of Social Services. She is currently Section Editor for Longitudinal and Life Course Studies and a member of several other journal editorial boards. Janeen is an elected fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and a former member of its executive committee. She is a member of the Council for the Committee for Economic Development in Australia and the Expert Advisory Board for the Singapore Longitudinal Early Development Study.
